ForeignPolicy.com reported James Pooley, former deputy director-general at WIPO who managed the agency’s international patent division stated, “Why would you want to put the fox in charge of the hen house?”

Google does not identify Crimea as belonging to Ukraine or Russia, however, it uses Russian place names on it’s map.

191116-The New York Times reported that Judge Shelley Joseph is being charged with Obstruction of Justice for helping an undocumented immigrant escape detention. She refused a plea deal that allowed her to avoid prosecution.

Her conversation with the defendant was being recorded and she is heard telling the clerk to turn off the audio recorder. In the end the defendant is let out the back door. He is later arrested and awaiting a deportation hearing. He has previously been deported in 2003 and 2007.

Dior had shown a video that had a map of China that didn’t include Taiwan.

190718-A Sacramento CBS new outlet reported the city of Berkeley will be revising all documents and ordinances to replace all instances of gendered pronouns, such as “he” and “she” with “they,” according to the ordinance.

The city manager said in a letter to the mayor and city council.

“Having a male-centric municipal code is inaccurate and not reflective of our reality,” Robinson said. “Women and non-binary individuals are just as entitled to accurate representation. Our laws are for everyone, and our municipal code should reflect that.”

This is only the 5th such declaration in history. The first was Polio, many years ago.

The pastor who brought Ebola to Goma used several fake names to conceal his identity. WHO is busy try to track contacts who were on the bus and may have met with him.

The Guardian reported that geographical region expansion is now 500km.

In the article one dentist had his $300K tuition paid off, and, given Calif’s high tax rate, this is equivalent to $500K before tax income. Or, equivalently an extra $100K a year.

Calif recently offered free health care to illegal immigrants 26 and under. But many Calif medical students leave the state after graduation. Many more doctors are needed given the states population growth and sanctuary policies.

Under the bilateral Migration Protection Protocols, or “Remain in Mexico” policy, anyone returned must be fluent in Spanish because they may have to reside in Mexico up to five years until a U.S. federal judge decides their asylum claim. Escobar has been accused by some in coaching these people of telling them to be mute, effectively, thus they can remain in the US.

190602 – All of the top leaders of Amnesty International, a human rights organization, have offered to resign after an internal review uncovered a toxic work environment and culture, that included bullying. Early in March, the organization was also accused of violating US labor laws regarding right to organize and unpaid interns.

Germany may tax foreign funded mosques

190512-Germany is considering a “Mosque Tax” to replace or reduce Germany’s Islamic institutions dependence on foreign investment. For example, some 900 of the total 3,000 mosques are run and funded by the Turkish-Islamic Union of the Institute for Religion (DITIB), under the authority of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government with their Imams being paid by the Turkish state. Germany is home to 5 million Muslims, over 6% of the population. Some have stated the mosques should be self supporting and not require foreign funding or imported Imans.

Some migrants follow Sharia law where it is permitted to have up to 4 wives, they then collect social benefits using the collective family allowing for larger receipts as each wife, legally(under German Civil Law), is a single parent.

190503 – US Steel announces a $1.2B investment in it’s Mon Valley Steel Works. Steel has been on a 40 year decline. Waste heat from the plant will be used to produce electricity. Trump has imposed tariffs on some imported steel.

EU Weary of US Tech Giants

190503 – European Council President Donald Tusk said in Warsaw on May 3, 2019; stated “the world needs to be wary of the rise of tech giants such as Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon”. He compared their powers to those of countries such as China. He also stated he was worried about the EU’s children. The EU in the last year gave regulators the power to impose fines of up to 4% of global revenue for fines. The EU recently fine Google $1.7B for abusive advertising practices. Int 2018 and 2017 Google was fined $5B and $2.4B respectively. The EU has hit Apple with a back tax bill of $15B. The US government is also jumping in with a large fine of up to $5B against Facebook.

North Korea Joins Trade Initiative

190418 – China recently announced North Korea would be joining it’s Belt and Road initiative. Trade Embargo? Not!! Italy also signed on as the first G7 member. Being part of the initiative gives countries access to loans and Chinese exports. The goal is infrastructure driven growth versus consumer spending growth. The United States has been left out of the initiative.

Pelosi fights to protect Bay Area Tech Offshore Tax Havens

Pelosi speaking in Dublin Ireland seized control of American International and Trade Policy and stated that if the UK reinstated border controls with Ireland under Brexit, “there would be no chance of a U.S.-U.K. trade agreement.” Nancy Pelosi is an ardent open border advocate. Ireland is a key US tax haven. US corporations, such as Apple, maintain headquarters there for tax purposes. Ireland maintains a 12% tax rate, almost half of the US's reduced 21% rate.

China prohibits the word-"Taiwan" for airlines

190425 – China sent a letter to 36 foreign airlines on 4/25 demanding changes in the way Hong Kong, Macau, and even Taiwan are referenced. China does not consider Taiwan a separate country. The letter stated the airlines must complete a “self-rectification” report once the issue is resolved. This has been an ongoing issue that even involves auto companies such as Audi.

China is changing Extradition Laws for Hong Kong

We first saw this story in the print edition of the Economist. The Extradition Laws for Hong Kong residents were basically changed to allow criminal trials to be conducted in mainland China, rather then in Hong Kong. Some have thought the mainland courts would be somewhat harsher then the traditional, British oriented Hong Kong courts.

China's re-education camps for Muslim minority's could be phased out

190317 – Chinese re-education camps in Xinjiang will “gradually disappear“. Xinjiang, which shares a border with several countries including Pakistan and Afghanistan, has long suffered from violent unrest and Chinese have called the camps job-education camps to help these people assimilate properly into Chinese society.

EU and Arab League hold first ever talks

190225 – Angel Merkel and Theresa May in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, for a first ever two days of talks between the European Union and the Arab League. The leaders pledged on the 24th to boost cooperation in the fight against terrorism and to tackle unauthorized migration. Merkel also urged the Arab states to respect human rights.

181126 – Olaf Scholz, German Finance Minister, called on France to give up its permanent seat on the UN Security Council and turn it into a EU (European Union) seat. Germany was left out of a security council seat in 1945, most likely because of bad behavior in World War-2.

It suggests that nationalists have too much devotion to their nation, while patriots have just the right amount.

180912 – The EU votes to punish Hungary over ‘breaches’ of EU core values. More than two-thirds of MEPs backed the censure motion – the first such vote against a member state under EU rules. The issue has been Mr Orban’s government has taken a hardline stance against immigration. Most British Conservative MEPs supported the Hungarian government, arguing that the EU had intruded into purely national matters. Poland is also facing disciplinary proceedings.

180821 – Facebook begins assigning a “Reputation Score” to all users, similar to China’s SCS (Social Credit Score). In 2018 the China’s SCS helped prevent, 17 million flights and 5.4 million high-speed rail trips to travelers with low scores.

160712 – The Philippines wins an international arbitration court case in the Hague. It ruled China has no legal basis for its historical claim to the South China Sea. China stated it would ignore the ruling. Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Taiwan are countries that have also been affected by China’s claim.

Britain votes to begin BREXIT

160623 – Britain votes, with a 71.8% turnout, with a 51.8% majority vote, to leave the European Economic Union. The original target date for leaving was March 30, 2019. Britain has been in the EU since 1973. Their original application, in 1963, was vetoed by French President Charles de Gaulle. They had a referendum in 1975 to leave, but voted to stay in. In 1984 Margaret Thatcher re-negotiated UK payments to the EU from 20% of the total to 12%. Primary reasons given were immigration-no control over the border, economics-the EU has been a dysfunctional economic entity, and Sovereignty-the inability of the citizens to control what happens to their country.

My Favorite Movies – by year

I’m kind of strange guy. Where we live we don’t get any TV stations, since they are now digital and the signals don’t reach into our valley. And we don’t have cable. And we don’t have a satellite dish.

What do I have? Netflix DVD’s, the radio, and the Internet, courtesy of my smart phone being a wifi-hotspot. Sometimes I feel like if President Roosevelt was around, he would create a 21st century Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) for us poor internet users. We don’t have access to MSNBC, CNN, NPR, and heavens to betsy, FOX. So I occasionally go to the movies.

Disclaimer – Note that I am not a professional film critic. I am just an old white guy. How I like a movie may be affected by whether I had a good or bad day when I watched it. I don’t like Hollywood trying to morph my views. But I can learn at times. And note that I may not have seen your favorite movie for that year.

In reverse time order, so I can add to it. My favorite movies.

2018 – Beirut – A former diplomat, who knows Beirut, returns to the city to save a colleague. My favorite line of the movie. “It’s Beirut, Mr. Skyles. It depends on who you ask. PLO says it’s the Amal Militia, Amal Militia says is the Christian Militia. Christian Militia says it’s the Druze. Druze says it’s the Syrian Army. Listen to the radio from Damascus, they’ll tell you its the Israelis, making excuses to come across the border. Ask Israel, for them it’s always the PLO.”
2017 – The Foreigner – Always liked Jackie Chan movies. He is older in this one, so it’s a bit more cerebral then his other ones.
2016 – Passengers – Jennifer Lawrence is good in this film. I could spend all day watching her in this character. In 250 years, or so, this could be a reality.
2015 – The Age of Adeline – I am sucker for decent Time Travel movies. This ones was a bit unique for me.
2014 – Fury – Fury is based on the true story of a Sherman tank crew in WWII. I could see a little of myself in each of the crew members. And the tank battles, seemed surreal.
2013 – Scratching my head here.
2012 – Emperor – It scored low with the ratings, but living in Japan in the 60’s as a child. I can remember the Emperor, his palace, and reading about it. So this film hit home with me, especially the final scenes.
2011 – Moneyball – Loved seeing how math and statistics helped a team do mo betta. This should almost be required showing in 7th grade math classes. America’s schools need some help in applied mathematics.

2010 – Red – I have liked most Bruce Willis movies since his debut on Moonlighting. He’ll probably not win an Academy Award, but I seem to pay to see his movies.
2009 – Star Trek – After two wimpy follow on series from the original 60’s series. And a bunch of movies with a lot of Hollywood preaching. This movie hit the mark. Captain Kirk is again manly.
2008 – Valkyrie – just liked it.
2007 – Ocean’s 13 – Love big crime heist movies.
2006 – 300 – Loved seeing King Leonidas getting everyone to go fight the Persians. Of course it’s not 100% historically accurate, but it kept me on the edge of my seat.
2005 – Scratching my head here.
2004 – The Phantom of the Opera – Not a super musical guy. But this ranks up near Sound of Music for me. Bought the DVD, and still watch it now and then. Beautiful singing…
2003 – The Italian Job and Master and Commander – Two movies, sorry, like a teenage girl here, can’t make up my mind. Master and Commander, love the chase, love the Galapagos. and the battle scenes seemed real. Italian Job, love how-to heist job movies.
2002 – The Transporter & The Bourne Identity – Two again. These are both great starting movies for a series. I like the Bourne series the best. My wife the Transporter series. Since I’m always trying to make her happy, hers is here also. We need more movies like these. Entertaining. Some violence, some chase scenes.
2001 – Zoolander – I’m embarrassed about this one. But with a couple of glasses of wine, this had me rolling.

1998 – The Parent Trap – A remake that was great. And Lindsay Lohan at 12, seemed to be a sweet child, whoah, what happened? Runner up, “There’s Something About Mary“. A favorite relative, saw this with a few friends that were nuns, oh my!
1997 – Titanic – Great movie, me and the Hollywood folks agreed this year!
1996 – Mission Impossible – Always loved the late 60’s TV show, it got me to the theater, and I’ve watched all of the ones that followed.
1995 – Desperado – Love the music, love the action, and love Selma Hayek, yikes. Second place goes to “Crimson Tide“. I’m also a sucker for submarine movies.

1939 – Wizard of Oz – A great movie, Brains, Heart, Courage, and Family are the true themes.

If I Was – The Pope

For years we have heard about Catholic Priests and young boys. Recently the topic flared up again with the release of the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report released in mid-August 2018 where it was reported that more than 1,000 identifiable victims of 300 priests had been recorded.

So, jumping quickly to topic what should be done about it?

Hmm, if I was the Pope, what would I do?

First, I would report having bad dreams for a few weeks.

When my fellow Cardinals queried me about it. I would slowly let it slip that I had been dreaming about taking a wife. I would ask, “Who must be putting these illicit thoughts into my head?”.

Okay, today a Catholic Priest can’t be married. But it was not always this way, see below. To not marry is a Catholic Regulation. Where the male only priesthood is Catholic dogma which is irreversible by papal decree. So ideally, allowing marriage should be easier…

Some discussion might ensue. In the end I would not take a wife. But I would decree that Catholic Priests could take a wife. I might be mean, and say Cardinals need to be celibate, or even Bishops. But I would want change in most of the church. Maybe just the Pope should stay, celibate?

Would this cure the Catholic Church sex problems?

Not necessarily, but, over the next few decades the problems of Priests interacting incorrectly with non-adults would be significantly reduced.

Allowing men who are married into the church might help in recruiting more priests into the church, a problem that has been documented over the years. Presently the average age is 63 years old. And going higher.

There may need to be a radical change in public sentiment about the church to aid in recruitment. Allowing priests to marry would allow interested future priests to feel good about themselves.

Other churches that allow marriage don’t have near the problem that the Catholic church does. They do also have some problems with priest/pastors/ministers intermingling to closely with some parishioners. But at least in these cases the parishioner is likely to be above the age of 18.

A number of popes were sexually active after the 1563 reaffirmation of celibacy. Pope Alexander VI fathered at least seven children. And 4 Popes were alleged to have homosexual relationships within the 100 years prior to this re-affirmation.
